Is Saul Perlmutter explaining the principle of equivalence even better?

Supernova expert *Saul Perlmutter*, is telling us that Einstein's original cosmological constant was not Einstein's biggest blunder after all.

Saul Perlmutter says Einstein's cosmological constant, a repulsive force equal and opposite to gravity, is alive and well and presently in space between all the stars and galaxies. In fact this is what, Saul Perlmutter claims, is holding them apart.

This is exactly what Einstein stated in the early 1920s when every scientist claimed we were in a steady state universe..

Gravity can not be discerned from an acceleration, said Einstein. This IS the principle of equivalence.

But this is only from that one person's point of view.

If we took the point of view of __everyone__ on earth then such acceleration would have to be going on in ** all directions**. This added to Mach's principle -- after getting the view of everyone on earth -- would have us believing that the principle of equivalence would tell us that gravity could not be discerned from an

Since Einstein's repulsive force is now all around us, according to Saul Perlmutter, then, according to the principle of equivalence, we cannot discern this opposite of gravity's, repulsive force from an **accelerating, expansion** of this universe that is all around us.

If that is so then welcome back again to the 1920s and a steady state universe.

I have written this especially for mathematical physicist Anthony Bermanseder to convince him that both he **and** Saul Perlmutter could be right: that this is only a *perceived* accelerating, expansion.

You are absolutely right. The effect is local.

But the words were >>after getting the view of everyone on earth --

would have us believing>>

The very opposite of this is exactly what is now being done by those

who claim we are in an accelerating, expanding universe.

You are right. It is a wrong assumption.

But then so must be the assumption of the accelerating, expanding

universe crowd because they are doing the very same thing when you

think it through.

Clearly the earth's gravity is radially directed (hence different,

in different parts of the earth.) But the equivalence principle is

a local principle. It does not say that a global gravity field like

that over the whole earth can be transformed away by free fall. A

good discussion is in Edward Harrison's book Cosmology p 164-168."
